Guilderland Police Youth Services Division

The Guilderland Police Youth Services Division began in the 1970's and was originally named the Juvenile Aid Bureau. In 1997, the name changed to "Youth Services" due to the fact the division was dealing will all youth, not just kids under the age of 16. Along with the name change, youth officers uniforms changed from the traditional police uniform, to a more dressed down look. In 1998, the Guilderland School Board along with the Town of Guilderland began a School Resource Officer Program that puts a police officer in the schools for education and enforcement. The SRO program is designed to enhance positive relations with the youth in the school district.

Youth officers graduate from the Police Academy as are all other officers and receive additional training for their specialty. Those schools include Basic and Advanced Juvenile/Youth Officer Schools, School Resource Officer school, DARE school, and attend many conferences on various subjects including school violence, dealing with kids, and child abuse.

Youth Services officers are responsible for all youth calls received in town and handle all crimes involving youth, including follow ups with probation as well as Family Court. They are responsible for the Guilderland Schools from Elementary through High School, and some work out of the school as School Resource Officers. Education plays as large of a roll in their duties as YSD officers as they work toward improving relations and educating youth with various programs such as GLAD (Guilderland Learns About Drugs), DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). They also teach baby-sitting courses, and host bicycle rodeo's throughout the town.
