Guilderland Police Traffic Safety Unit

The Guilderland Police Traffic Safety Unit was created in 1990 after the department applied for a grant through the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Council that allowed the department to appoint two full time officers to the division whose primary responsibility would be traffic enforcement and education. The department appointed the first TSU officers, Adamczak and Cox who in conjunction with the then police/paramedic unit and weight enforcement unit made up the traffic unit as a whole. Today, the unit is staffed by three officers who continue the goals of the unit.

Traffic officers graduate from the Police Academy as are all other officers and receive additional training for their specialty. Those schools include Accident Investigation & Reconstruction, as well a Child Safety Seat School where they are certified to install all types of child safety seats, and additional training in DWI enforcement and education.

Traffic safety officers primary duty is enforcing New York State vehicle and traffic laws, and educating the public about those laws. Officers participate county or statewide sweeps though out the year in enforcement ranging from seat belt compliance to DWI enforcement. They are also responsible for traffic details targeting specific areas of the town that have been designated to be having problems. Many of these problems areas are reported by residents. Traffic officers also visit driver education classes within the school district working toward the the education aspect of their duties. They also participate annually in Traffic Safety Week usually held at the Crossgates Mall with displays to help promote vehicle and traffic safety including bicycling and rollerblading safety.
