Guilderland Police Patrol Division
The
Patrol Division was the first division created when the Guilderland
Police Department was formed in 1972. The Patrol Division remains by far
the largest division within the department, staffed currently with 19
members. Over the years, subdivisions such as Youth Services, Traffic
Safety and the K-9 unit were formed as the department began to look into
other areas that needed a great deal of attention. Members of those
subdivisions however still participate in patrol duties.
Officers are hired from the Albany County Civil Service list and
attend a the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Academy in
Schenectady, New York.
Over a 6 month period officers take a large variety of courses
including Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedure Law,
Search & Seizure, interviewing and interrogations to name a few. In
addition must complete physical training, defensive tactics, emergency
vehicle operation training, firearms training and certification, and
survival school.
The Patrol Division provides the initial response to all
complaints, be it criminal, civil, or assistance calls. In most cases
the patrol officers follow up on their own investigations with the
exception of felony complaints that are turned over to the department
investigators. The unit also responds to all motor vehicle accidents,
and other emergency calls.
