Guilderland Police Department - Employment
The
Guilderland P.B.A. is not at liberty to post job openings, however we can
provide some information as far as requirements and the process of how to
become a police officer with the Guilderland Police Department.
Candidates for the position of police officer in Guilderland are taken from
the Albany County Civil Service list. Interested parties may take the exam
through Albany County Civil Service, 112 State Street Albany, NY. The
Placement on the town list depends on score and resident status. Please
contact the Civil Service Department for more information on exam dates, and
information on resident requirements. The Guilderland Police Department also
accepts lateral transfers. A lateral transfer being a trained officer
already employed by another agency.
When openings become available, the department will request a current civil
service list from the county. Candidates are interviewed and must also pass
a number of things including a physical fitness test, a physical,
psychological examination, as well as a background investigation conducted
by the police department.
Once hired the applicant must attend and successfully complete training at
the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Academy located in Schenectady, New York which is
24 weeks long. During the academy recruits are trained in many areas of Law
Enforcement including, firearms training, defensive tactics, physical
fitness training, emergency vehicle operations, penal law, criminal
procedure law, vehicle and traffic law, survival school to name a few. After
graduating the academy, new officers must complete a three month training
with a field training officer. Officers are considered probationary for
their first year of employment.
Applications for employment can be picked up Monday through Friday at the
Chief of Police's office at the police department between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30
p.m.
