Guilderland Police Criminal Investigations Unit
The Guilderland Police Department
Criminal Investigations Unit was formed in 1992. As the department grew and the number of calls and crimes increased in
the town, there became a need to form and this additional division within
the department to alleviate case loads on patrol officers. Officer John Tashjian was appointed as the first Investigator for the
department. Since then, the police department has created three
additional Investigator positions, and Investigator Tashjian now
oversees the unit as Sr. Investigator. The unit has two evidence
technicians specialize in processing crime scenes for evidence such as
fingerprints, footprints, and DNA evidence.
Investigators with the Guilderland Police Department attend the basic police academy and upon promotion can receive additional training in interview and interrogation, detective school, and evidence technician training.
The Investigators are responsible for major crime investigations, including felonies and serious misdemeanors. Investigators review all cases taken by the Patrol Division and assist the division with many cases. The Investigators respond and investigate all instances of unattended deaths, and all deaths suspicious in nature, and also handle evidence work such as fingerprinting and photographing of crime scenes.
Working closely with Detectives from other agencies, the Guilderland Police Investigators are able to solve many crimes that effect the Guilderland community. The Investigators are also responsible for executing warrants and bringing fugitives to justice. The division is the only plain clothes unit in the department.
